...means asking for help! Do you remember all those black and white movies where someone would find themselves suddenly trapped in a quicksand pit? Those were the good old days! Quicksand is the ultimate place of stuck! There's almost no way you're getting out without something or someone from outside the sandpit to help. Every once in awhile the hero would figure out a way to grab a branch and pull himself out...but really...most of the time...he needed another person to pull him out. That's what is happening when you're stuck in life. When it comes down to it, you're stuck because you did something to get you stuck. Let's face it, if you knew how to get unstuck you would have done it by now. You actually need something or someone from the outside to get you unstuck! But quicksand, just like life, is tricky. Sometimes you don't even know that you're stuck. Sometimes you're just standing there thinking you're choosing to hang out, when really you're sinking in farther and farther. Here are a few steps to getting unstuck:Step 1: Acknowledge that you're stuck. "Oh shoot, I've been like this for a looooong time. Argh!" This is a great time to get our your journal and start writing. Step 2: Admit you don't know how to get unstuck. "Damn, I've tried and tried to get unstuck, but I just don't know what to do." Step 3: Call Misha! Or ANYONE to help pull you out. The biggest, longest lasting stuckness usually happens when there's shame about being stuck! It's amazing what a little confession can do to create some momentum! Don't worry, you won't get penance here, I only sell more inspiration! ..doesn't always mean you feel powerful. Hello buzzing bees...did you miss me? I've been beating myself up for not writing to you in the last month. Argh! I hate when that happens! I was reflecting recently on how I often hear, "Misha, you are such a powerhouse." "You're so powerful." It's funny, because I don't always feel all that powerful. Many times I feel like “little Misha” going along trying to make a difference in the world and living a fulfilling life. Much of the time, I feel misunderstood and scared. And much of the time I rise above all that and do what I know I have to do. Actually, this whole path I've been on came from my mother telling me about 7 years ago that she saw that I had so much "potential." From that one little statement blossomed years of inquiry into myself. I asked myself, "If I have so much potential, why have I not fully fulfilled it?" As you might have guessed, I've worked very hard to fulfill my potential over the last 7 years. Now I do feel more powerful than I've ever felt before, now I am fulfilling my life's purpose more than I've ever dreamed I could, now I am living in greater integrity inside myself, more than I've ever reached before. I am a powerhouse, and I still can feel quite small. It's amazing how that works. I'm telling you this because I remember thinking about and admiring powerful people my whole life. I thought they had something I did not. When I set out to understand myself more, it wasn't to become more powerful...it was to be free from the blocks that were keeping me from living my potential. ...the meaning of manifestation. Happy New Year you buzzing bees of creative possibility! This is the time of year that I go crazy with creative explosion! I love the wintery inward time of reflection and then the burst of possibility that the new year brings to me. This is the time when I feel ripe to lay the framework for the rest of my year and I love inspiring others to do the same. In some of my musings around the Bay Area I've realized that some people misunderstand what I mean by creating what you're wanting in the world. I want to clarify what I mean. There is a big difference between asking for a thing or action that you want and getting to the underlying needs and desires that thing might fulfill and then allowing for inspired action to bubble from that place. In our day-to-day lives we often go around trying to figure out what will make our lives better. The process tends to look like: 1) I don't like (this) about my life, 2) I better do something about it, 3) I'm going to do (that). Many times, leads to layers of trying stuff that kind of works but not all the way. My invitation to you is to slow down the process and follow these steps. Step 1: Identify the issue: I don't like (this aspect) about my life. (fill in the blank) Be very specific. Step 2: Ask yourself: What is not fulfilling or not being fulfilled about (this aspect)? What are my true needs in this situation? Step 3: Listen to the ALL the voices. Often we have conflicting voices in our heads. Slow down enough to hear all sides of the argument without telling any of the sides they are wrong. Allow the voices to have their say. Step 4: This listening allows your view to broaden. Allowing the different perspectives can offer new possibilities. These are the seeds to making choices that are fully in alignment with your whole being. Allow your actions to bubble from this place. YAY! This makes for a happy new year and a happy new you. Transformation is a journey... On this solstice, I invite you to reflect on the threshold that we just passed through of the cycle of endings and the possibilities of new beginnings that this day holds. This image is from the Zen Tarot Osho Deck. It depicts the self burning from within, a death of sorts. These last few months have offered a reflection of this ending cycle. Sometimes it feels intense, like the Thunderbolt and other times it's more subtle. During these times I am continuously reminded to: - Breath
- Observe
- Allow, and
- Open to the new possibilities of what life is bringing me.
You too can use these simple techniques to move through this time. Winter is a time of letting go. As you move through this time and difficult feelings arise I invite you to (1) stop, put your hands on your heart and stomach and drop your breath into your body. (2) Watch the events from a detached perspective and pay attention to the thoughts that are arising. (3) Find a way to let what's happening be okay. Where are the blessings in what is happening right now? (4) Open to the possibilities that could be coming your way as the old leaves your life there is a lot more room for new possibilities. As you practice these exercises you will find that going through transition is easier, more graceful, and moves quicker than when you struggled and resisted. As you look at the transformation card you can see the amazing power that is available on the other side of the Thunderbolt of death. to make the journey. Often when we start to dream...we dream big. That's what dreams are meant to do...get you out of the everyday and into thinking out of your box. They are big out-there possibilities that sound amazing and seem like they'd be the best thing ever. Often, our dreams are so big that when we tell other people our dream they look at us funny. Then all the stories start..."I'll never get my dream." "I can't get support for my ideas." "I'm all alone in this again." The reason this happens is because we're jumping ahead. People are not ready for the big idea yet...The big idea is still a baby. It needs to be treated like a precious infant. Nurtured into maturity until it's ready and able to play with the big kids. Don't let your inspiration get squelched because it's just a little spark! Your idea needs you! It will not stay alive unless you nurture it. Unless you switch it up! I must admit. At almost the one year mark, I finally feel like I've mastered my collage workshop. I've been loving it and I'm getting a little bored with myself. OOPS! Do you ever get bored with the things you love to do the most? I think it's a common problem. We think of some great idea. We do it. Then once we've mastered it we say, "Whatever, that wasn't such a big deal. What's the next thing?" I have a habit of mastering and moving on, mastering and moving on, mastering and moving on... Life can feel a bit like training for a circus... I used to think circus performers were just naturally talented and could do all those tricks since childhood and never really had to work at gracefully performing those epic feats... Some people make life look so easy! Well, I grew up and being in the artist community I started meeting some circus performers and actually here's the secret...it's really hard and takes a lot of time, it's scary, and they get hurt, they have to learn to trust others, build strength, stay disciplined, and then maybe, at the end of it all, they get the most fulfilling thing in the world...recognition! After being part of a theater performance for the past 3 years there is nothing better than working hard on something, pushing your edges, and then having an audiance give you all the love back. It's INTENSE! Just like real life. You too can have your standing ovation...keep focused on your dream, do the work and get help doing it! Here's where you can practice your circus skills right here in Santa Cruz... My friend Paige will teach you how! Have you been feeling the intensity lately? Try this: 1) Identify what is freaking you out. (ex. I have too much to do and too little time!) 2) Observe your thoughts and stories around the situation. (ex. I can't get anything done, I'm totally overwhelmed!) 3) What are you making it mean about you that this situation is happening? (ex. I'm so lame!) 4) Really listen to that voice that's making it mean something personal. (ex. Wow, I really have a lot of thoughts that I'm lame. This feeling of overwhelm is super uncomfortable.) 5) Keep self soothing, these are the first steps to helping the feelings transform. If you can identify it, it can transform. Ahhhhhhhhh.... How might your whole life be a work of art? It's funny to me how many people say, "I'm not creative." What? From my perspective, this statement is a complete impossibility. Creativity is an innate feature of our being. Yes, some of us have natural talent and a proclivity to outward expressions of flamboyant artistry. Others of us use our creativity more subtly, others may be creative and not even know it's happening. Think about it...how are you creative? Honor that part of yourself right now. I do sometimes feel I have not one creative bone in my body. Usually that's when I'm overwhelmed, task oriented, overly focused, or completely stressed out. What I've found is staying in my open creative space takes practice. It takes commitment to choosing a wider perspective. It takes looking for inspiration. Sometimes it takes yanking myself outside my own box. Now when I feel bored, irritated, or frustrated I think of it as the perfect opportunity to get CREATIVE. For all you business minded people who think business doesn't work unless it's efficient, task oriented and hierarchical...(shhh, that was me) and all those who hope for a huge shift in corporate consciousness. Sorry, there's no inspiration without the despair... Oh yeah, come on, you can't expect me to always come to you all happy. Like you, I'm a full spectrum human, and I wouldn't be fully authentic if I didn't acknowledge that I can be scared, worried, freaked out, and down right hopeless at times. This thing that I'm wanting to inspire in others...this thing called the Thrill of Creation...it's actually not so easy. It actually takes a lot of work. It actually requires a huge amount of presence and darn right getting real with all those parts we don't like about ourselves. OK, I'll own it, getting real with all the parts I don't like about myself, over and over again! That's why people don't do it. It takes courage, commitment, trust, faith, support, will, and Vulnerablity. If you're feeling the squeeze of shame and shadow over your life right now...I just want you to know, you're not alone. I know it feels horrible and often like you are never going to get out. But I'm letting you know, even while I'm steeped inside a scary place right now, I know there is a huge blessing for me on the other side. The more I embrace my shadow the more freedom I know I will feel. The more you embrace your shadow, the more freedom I know you will feel. Often during these times we can feel completely alone. This is the time we need the most support. Please allow me or another professional or a friend come to support you through this time. You are actually giving a huge gift to someone when you reach out for help. The gift of trusting another with your most fragile self.
